New Delhi: A solemn and emotionally charged ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where several distinguished personalities from Indian cinema and the arts were honoured with prestigious civilian awards.
In one of the most poignant moments of the evening, late legendary actor Dharmendra was conferred the Padma Vibhushan posthumously. The honour was received on his behalf by his wife, actor and Member of Parliament Hema Malini, from President Droupadi Murmu.
As Hema Malini stepped forward to accept the award, accompanied by her daughter Esha Deol, the moment turned deeply emotional. Visibly moved, she struggled to hold back tears while receiving the honour that recognised the late actor’s immense contribution to Indian cinema.
The Padma Vibhushan is India’s second-highest civilian award, recognising exceptional and distinguished service to the nation.
Dharmendra, one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated stars, passed away on 24 November 2025 at the age of 89 after suffering from respiratory complications that required ventilator support. His passing marked the end of an era in Hindi film history.

The ceremony also honoured several other prominent personalities. Bengali cinema veteran Prosenjit Chatterjee was awarded the Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. Speaking after receiving the honour, he expressed gratitude for a career spanning over four decades and more than 400 films, calling the recognition deeply fulfilling.
In addition, advertising legend Piyush Pandey was posthumously conferred the Padma Bhushan for his transformative contribution to Indian advertising. Known for iconic campaigns such as Mile Sur Mera Tumhara, Pandey helped shape modern Indian advertising and gave it global recognition.
The ceremony underscored the nation’s recognition of artistic excellence, while the emotional tribute to Dharmendra stood out as one of the most memorable moments of the evening.
